A reveller was flown to hospital after he was seriously injured in an alleged assault at the Music in the Vines festival.

The 41-year-old man was flown to hospital from Macarthur in the state’s south west with suspected critical injuries on Saturday and is receiving treatment at a Melbourne hospital.

Festival organisers say a fight allegedly broke out as the men were waiting to catch a bus home after the festival finished.

A 48-year-old man from Portland has been charged with a string of charges including recklessly causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault and affray.

Two other men from Portland, aged 45 and 48, were also arrested but have since been released.

Festival organisers have released a statement responding to the event. The one-day festival featured largely local and Australian acts like the Pierce Brothers, Little Georgia and Bones and Jones.

“The Committee of Music in the Vines is deeply saddened by an incident that occurred after our festival came to a close last night,” the post read.

“Security and support staff immediately attended and emergency services responded quickly to the situation,” the post read.

Festival President Pieter Badenhorst said organisers have been in contact with the man’s family.

“We are receiving updates and have offered the man’s family our full support during this difficult time,” he said.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers online, or on 1800 333 000.
