INTERVIEW | Velvet Code Discusses EDM and Ladybugs

Velvet Code, who is signed to AMG/Sony Music Entertainment, recently unveiled the music video for “Mary Offered Ladybugs and Love Yous,” the second single from his Dreamer album.

The genesis of Velvet Code occurred in NYC, where he made an immediate impact while touring with Mindless Self Indulgence, followed by releasing his debut album, Black Blue Blind, receiving glowing praise from Perez Hilton, Arjan Writes, EQ Music, and Sirius XM Radio’s Larry Flick. His song “Say You Love Me” won Song of the Year at the Independent Music Awards.

With his vibrant sound, a blend of electro-pop and EDM flavored with ‘80’s pop tangs, Velvet Code’s music commands frequent appearances on Billboard’s Dance and Club charts.

CelebMix caught up with the Canadian pop star to discover more about how he got his start in music, his influences, his songwriting process, and why he makes music.

How would you describe yourself? 

Well, I would consider myself as an optimist and a dreamer. I shy away from negativity and try and find the best in people. I’ve had my fair share of struggles in my life, and the way I got through those was to maintain this outlook on life. A friend of mine once told me the key to living life to its fullest is to embrace the following: “If it’s not fun, done!” I try to never lose my childish innocence.

What’s your favorite song to belt out in the car or the shower?

I’m a huge Robbie Williams fan and I love to sing two of his songs: “I Will Talk and Hollywood Will Listen” and “Feel”. They both get me going for the day!

Who is your favorite music artist?

My favorite music artist is P!NK. She’s the strongest woman, inside and out, and I love what she stands for.

How did you get started in music?  What’s the backstory there?

I was singing in the shower one day, and my roommate told me I should consider pursuing a career in music. I have always wanted to…I played piano as a child and studied music in school, but I never thought that I had a shot. I then decided to take vocal lessons with industry legend Elaine Overholt, and things just took off from there. I met a music producer in Toronto who taught me so much about the industry. I started recording songs and then made my way to New York. That’s when I was reborn as Velvet Code.

What musicians influenced you the most?

I would say Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Madonna, David Bowie, and many others. Every artist had something special that resonated with me.

What’s the story behind your name – Velvet Code?

I was in New York City, working  with vocal coach Bill Riley, who introduced me to Wendy Starland. We wrote “Say You Love Me” together, and that’s where it all began. I decided that I wanted a band to play with me, so that was the first rendition, but over time, I realized that I wanted to play all the instruments myself, so that’s why I’m a solo artist now.

What drew you to trance and progressive house music?

It was my love for Avicii and Paul Van Dyk that initially drew me to Trance and Progressive House. They are absolute legends in the industry and have taught me so much. Today, I feel that EDM/Trance/Progressive House is making a huge comeback into mainstream pop music, and that’s what I’m hoping I can be a part of.

What inspired your latest album, Dreamer?

It is a collection of some of the most personal moments in my life over the past few years. I had to dig deep into my soul and relive some of those moments in order to get it done, which was a difficult task. I made it out alive though, and I’m happy with what I was able to achieve. I hope that it resonates with everyone and that my fans enjoy listening to it.

What’s the story behind the title of “Mary Offered Ladybugs and Love Yous?”

It’s about paying tribute to the fallen heroes from the LGBT and Civil Rights movements, and despite the progress we’ve made, there is still more to do. My hope is that during these troubled political times that we all take a moment to dance and enjoy ourselves. It’s the most important thing!

What is your song-writing process? Lyrics first, or music first?

It’s a fluid process and never the same. Some days I decide to work on a beat first while other times I work with a melody or lyric first. It’s about what I’m feeling in the moment. It’s quite a complex process!

Why make music? I mean what’s the point?

Music is the gateway to our souls, and I feel music is the most important element of life that we take for granted. It isn’t just entertainment. It’s a connection to everyone. I believe that music connects us all, despite our differences or beliefs. It’s universal!

What’s next for you musically?
