He is like a wall, Daniil Medvedevs coach Gilles Cervara comments about his players unor

Daniil Medvedev’s coach Gilles Cervara is all praise about his player after he won the Miami Open title. In an interview with the ATP Tour, he was asked about his player’s game style which is considered very unconventional. Hinting at the unpredictability of Medvedev’s game Gilles said “sometimes his shots have power, sometimes not. Sometimes you expect something but he goes the other way. Sometimes you expect a deep ball and it comes short with no consistency.”

Pointing at Medvedev’s tenacity Gilles Cervara commented, “He is like a wall. Every ball is coming back and he’s not missing. He’s serving, he’s running. He’s able to almost find a solution for any problem.”

Talking about Daniil Medvedev’s hunger to win Cervara mentioned, “He’s an amazing fighter. He really wants to win all the time, so he doesn’t give anything to the opponent and he pushes the opponents at a level that sometimes… other players, they’re not used to playing every point like this.”

Daniil Medvedev turned the tide of 2023 at the Rotterdam Open

Though Medvedev is considered a hard court specialist, he didn’t get any favorable results in the U.S. Open 2022 and Australian Open 2023. He was knocked out of U.S. Open in the round of 16 by a brutal Nick Kyrgios. His stay at Australian Open was shorter, facing defeat at hands of Sebastian Korda in the 3rd Round.

Things started to look up for the player from the Rotterdam Open in February. Cervara said, “A few days before the first round in Rotterdam, I felt Daniil quite nervous, quite not confident.” So what did Cervararo do to bring out the winner in a nervous Daniil? To this, the coach said, “My job at that time was to find the way to talk to him in a good way to find the good button inside himself to make him practice well and to win the sets during practices.”

Cervara said he didn’t give any special advice to Medvedev but the two just tried to adapt to the situation at hand. “He’s a smart guy and he’s an amazing player, when you touch the good thing, he’s able to transform sh** to gold, let’s say it like this,” Cervara told ATP.

Daniil Medvedev won his 5th ATP Title by being crowned winner in the Miami Open 2023. He defeated Jannik Sinner in the Miami Open finals who looked very invincible in the previous rounds. Before that, he reached the finals of Indian Wells where Carlos Alcaraz ended his 19-match winning streak. He won all the 3 tournaments leading up to Indian Wells i.e. Dubai Tennis Championship, Qatar Open, and Rotterdam Open.

Now Medvedev and Cervara are gearing up for the Clay season, the least favorite of his surfaces. Perhaps the duo will bring out some magic even at the red courts. But just like Jannik Sinner jibed at him in the Miami Open trophy ceremony, we fans can only say this to Medvedev. “Let’s see how you do there?”
